The Present and Future of Elderly Care Robots – Original by Liu Dongguang

Robots are artificial intelligence devices broadly categorized into industrial and service robots. Industrial robots, primarily used in manufacturing, feature six-axis robotic arms as a typical example and are now widely deployed in automated production across various factories. Service robots handle non-production tasks and are further divided into three categories: consumer, professional, and special-purpose. Consumer service robots include cleaning, household management, food service, education, entertainment, consulting, and tour guiding applications; they are characterized by low operational risk and do not require complex technical skills. Professional service robots cover healthcare, elderly care, and business sales domains, demanding high entry barriers and strong technical expertise. Special-purpose robots operate in hazardous environments such as military operations, exploration, disaster relief, radiation zones, and chemical hazard disposal, typically far from general populations.

Do you believe it? Despite the government's strong push for "Smart Health and Elderly Care Services," there is still no market demand? — Liu Dongguang

Since its official launch in 2017, smart health and elderly care has seen little breakthrough progress. Beyond government-funded promotion and pilot programs, very few care institutions or families are willing to pay for these solutions themselves. Without market demand, scaling remains a challenge, severely limiting the industry's growth. As one expert put it: "Policy enthusiasm is high, but market adoption is low; products claim to be smart yet fail to meet elderly care needs, while true elderly care remains unsmart."

China is about to enter the era of fully intelligent elderly care.

Trillion-dollar opportunity in the senior care industry: Are you ready? In 2025, China's elderly population exceeded 3 billion, accounting for 21% of the total population—marking entry into a deeply aging society. Proactively addressing population aging has become a major national strategy. Senior care directly impacts people's well-being, social stability, and sustainable economic development, drawing intense attention from all sectors of society. With advances in economy and technology, traditional elderly care models can no longer meet diverse, high-quality demands. Efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality intelligent elderly care is now an inevitable industry trend. Globally, elderly care still relies heavily on manual services. However, China already leads the world in 5G, AI, cloud computing, big data, and IoT technologies—positioning the country to pioneer the era of fully intelligent elderly care.
